Acting

My Top 4 Favorite Actors Of All Time

Between award shows, entertainment news, and the fame, it’s easy to believe an actor’s life is glamorous and easy. The truth is, though, the job of an actor is difficult and sometimes grueling — famous or not. Many actors work second jobs and live in small space so they can have a shot at what they love. Aside from the physical difficulty, actors can also face an emotional strain in order to achieve the best performance they can. Acting is an art form and I have a deep respect for those who work in the profession because of their talents and personal sacrifices which affect so many. To somehow determine my favorite actors (the question no one wants to answer because it’s just too much too difficult) my measurement is based solely in their on-screen performance.

4. Andrew Lincoln

Andrew Lincoln, The Walking Dead

Andrew Lincoln is a British actor who really stands out to me. Although he’s appeared in other movies, his breakout role in The Walking Dead is definitely my favorite. It seems like his performance in each episode keeps getting better and better. His ability to display emotions through facial expressions or body language alone is one of the reasons he his on my favorites list. Lincoln’s ability to show emotion, whether it’s sadness, anger or happiness, comes through the screen undeniably well. He really makes the audience feel what he feels.

3. Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal, Zodiac

Jake Gyllenhaal has appeared in a number of great movies such as Donnie Darko, Zodiac, Nightcrawler, Prisoners and Southpaw. Gyllenhaal has demonstrated great emotional depth and excellent performances in each of these movies. In Nightcrawler, he flat out gave me the creeps — It was a phenomenal performance. I love that I can watch him being witty and funny in one movie, then witness him being completely dramatic in another. He is so believable and seems to be very charismatic in his roles. It’s this depth that separates him from other actors and makes him outstanding to watch on screen.

2. Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant

Having just won his first Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role (finally) in The Revenant, Leonardo DiCaprio should be on everyone’s top list of actors. One of my favorite DiCaprio performances is when he played the special needs brother of Gilbert Grape in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. DiCaprio’s performance was just as good, if not better, than his co-star, Johnny Depp. DiCaprio was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Arnie Grape. His performance in Django Unchained was outstanding. DiCaprio played a slave owner in that film, which is far from what I’ve ever seen him play before. There were even reports of him feeling bad on set for having to say such cruel and racist remarks. His diverse roles showcase the exact reason he’s on my list.

1. Christian Bale

Christian Bale, Batman

My list wouldn’t be complete without the phenomenal method actor, Christian Bale. Other than playing the best Batman ever, he has appeared in a wide range of films where he displays amazing emotion and dedication. Bale went as far as to lose an astonishing amount of weight for his role in The Machinist — he lost over 60 pounds and weighed right around 120 pounds. If that wasn’t drastic enough, he then had to gain weight to play Batman in Batman Begins. Bale also gave a really creepy performance as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. That’s the mix of dedication and emotional depth that has led this method actor to such great success.

Being an actor takes practice, determination and patience — and so much more. These actors, as well as countless others, have truly mastered the craft of acting and gifted us all with their talents.
